Few characters in fiction are as instantly recognizable as Gollum and his tormented counterpart, Smeagol. In My Precious! The Cabaret, these two fan-favourite personalities took centre stage in a riotous, one-ring circus of comedy, music, and pop-culture chaos. Brought to life by the multi-talented Morgan Palmer, the show was an energetic, fast-paced delight that left its audience utterly enthralled and delighted.

Palmer’s performance was nothing short of dazzling. His comedic timing was relentless, delivering jokes with machine-gun rapidity. Local references peppered the script, drawing enthusiastic laughter from the entire audience, with standout moments including a note-perfect re-enactment of an iconic 2024 Olympics moment, and the unexpected but fitting portrayal of a particular local politician as a fusion of Sauron and the Phantom of the Opera. One can only hope that, if this show tours, the jokes either still land or can be localised with such precision as they were for Palmer's hometown audience.

Each song in the show was cleverly chosen to enhance Tolkien’s original narrative, seamlessly integrating pop and show tunes into Gollum’s twisted tale. Audience favourites included 'I Will Survive' and 'Ain’t No Mountain High Enough', while a scene-stealing performance of Roxie from Chicago had the house roaring with laughter. Palmer’s physicality was a major highlight from beginning to end, his dynamic movements and exaggerated expressions adding layers of hilarity, particularly when shoulders shimmied and hips swayed in unexpected yet perfectly timed moments.

Vocally, Palmer committed fully to Gollum’s signature nasal whine, rarely straying from the iconic voice that fans know and love from the films. While this choice showcased his dedication to the character, it also hinted at a deliberate vocal restraint. A clever balance of showing his underlying musical theatre skills, whilst giving the audience the right amusement

Beneath the comedy and cabaret spectacle, My Precious! The Cabaret cleverly explored the deeper themes of addiction, fear, and co-dependence that define Gollum and Smeagol’s tragic existence. The show’s third-act climax saw the two personalities finally confess their love for each other, a surprisingly heartfelt moment that resonated deeply with the audience.

The result? A completely engaged, delighted, and thoroughly entertained crowd. Attendees who came for The Lord of the Rings Easter eggs found themselves captivated by Palmer’s vocal and comedic talent, his razor-sharp wit, and his inspired vision for this legendary character. And, crucially, his interactive approach kept the audience involved in a way that felt playful rather than confrontational—ensuring a comfortable and hilarious experience for all.

With My Precious! The Cabaret, Morgan Palmer proved that even the most tormented of Tolkien’s creations can shine under the spotlight. A bold, brilliant, and utterly precious night of theatre.
